This is why e-mail is a good thing: NASA to Review Plan to Phase Out Hubble.
Excerpt:
E-mails have poured in to the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, which coordinates the use of Hubble's instruments."It's been overwhelming. My e-mail is overflowing," said Steve Beckwith, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute.
"Every day, we've had offers of ideas, political support and even money. Every day, I get people who want to know how they can contribute to keeping Hubble alive."
Now, imagine if all those e-mails had to be typed, folded up, put into envelopes, addressed, stamped, and mailed. People might still have cared about the Hubble, but given the pace of modern life, I doubt that even a quarter of those letters would ever have made it to the mailbox.

Yay Hubble! Yay modern life! Now can somebody explain to me why my Visor suddenly stopped working? It's not the battery; I checked.

It's the other battery.

I absolutely agree. Go Hubble Go. I'll send some bucks through PayPal for that!

Oh that figures. They put in a SECRET, hidden battery so us regular yahoos (i.e., not full-on geeks, but not Luddites either) can feel reeeeely dumb.
And I wanted to be a scientist once. Sigh.
